Group's activities in aid of Strina 2013

Report by CSL Anita Muscat
13th and 22nd December 2013

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the Victoria Scout Group decided that the group would carry out two good deeds towards the end of the year 2013. The beneficiary would be the Strina campaign organized by the Community Chest fund. This was the third time the group had participated in this initiative. These activities were open to both members as well as outsiders.

Bicycle Hike

The first activity was a bicycle hike held on Friday 13th December 2013, a public holiday. This year two different routes were planned – one for the younger participants and a tougher one for the more experienced cyclists. Both groups left the Scout Headquarters simultaneously and each group followed its route. A police escort and an ambulance with personnel kindly provided by the Emergency Rescue and Response Corp accompanied each group. The blue skies and sunny conditions made it an ideal day for an outing in the Gozitan countryside. Each route took the cyclists through various locations amongst which were Victoria, Munxar, Sannat, Xewkija, Ghajnsielem, Kerċem, Santa Luċija and Xlendi.

Car Treasure Hunt

The second activity in aid of Strina 2013 was a Car Treasure Hunt held on Sunday 22nd December 2013. The participants met at the square in Munxar which was both the starting and finishing point for this treasure hunt. 11 teams took part and soon they were driving around Gozo following clues prepared by SL David Grech. The winning team and the runners-up were made up of members of the Xagħra Scout Group. Well done!

Presentation of the funds collected in aid of Strina 2013

The funds collected during these activities were added to various donations from parents and supporters. The Victoria Scout Group added its contribution as well. This brought up the total to €1000. On Strina Day, December 26th, a special show was put up at the Astra Theatre in Victoria, Gozo. The Group Scout Leader, Lorrie Saliba, presented a cheque for this amount to representatives of the Strina committee.
